The history of Kopuz, the national Turkic instrument, extends back to antiquity, over 1500 years old and used by Turkish communities in Central, Western and Northern Asia. Many instruments in Anatolian Turkish music culture, especially the baglama, are derived from the kopuz. There is a belief in Turkish communities that kopuz was invented by Dede Korkut and was a sacred instrument. It's a three-stringed instrument, without a curtain on its handle, playing with a hard plectrum similar to that of a tambura. Which looks like a kind of belt, is three to three and a half feet long, two bent beams of horsehair are stretched over it.
